BACKGROUND

QuEST Global was a billion-dollar engineering services and manufacturing company, headquartered in Bangalore and operating across more than 10 countries. In 2014, the leadership decided to separate the company into two distinct entities: one continuing under the QuEST name to focus on engineering services, the other a new brand for the manufacturing business.

The challenge was pointed. The equity in the original brand name could not simply be abandoned. Whatever emerged from the exercise had to carry something forward without being a pale echo of what it replaced. And the new brand had to do something the original had never needed to: speak for a manufacturing operation that believed, fundamentally, that the way it worked was different. chlorophyll was brought in to name and build the new brand from the ground up.

SECTOR

Aerospace & Manufacturing

The Brief

The manufacturing business being spun off had a clear identity in how it operated, even if it lacked one onpaper. Its leaders had built something unusual: a company organised around collaboration, not just capability. The belief was that partners at every level of the supply chain should work as genuine equals. Cost efficiency, speed, and quality came from removing friction between entities.

The brief, then, was not simply to name a company. It was to find a name that held this belief. The name had to be capable of expressing a philosophy, not just identifying a business.

Strategy

chlorophyll’s first task was to understand what genuinely distinguished this business from others in the sector. The company operated an integrated Special Economic Zone in Belagavi, bringing together machining, tooling, assembly, and logistics under one ecosystem. The clients were aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas majors.

The capability was real and demonstrable. But capability alone was not the brand. Plenty of manufacturershad capability. What this company had, and articulated clearly in how it spoke to its own people and itspartners, was a belief in collaborative efficiency: the idea that an ecosystem of partners working as equals produces better outcomes than a supply chain of vendors being managed.

Therefore, the operative word that emerged was ‘collaboration’. Collaboration forbusiness efficiency.

This belief needed to be the centre of the new brand.

Process

chlorophyll explored a range of naming directions before arriving at the one that worked. The constraints were precise: the name had to be pronounceable across geographies, available as a trademark, free of conflicting associations in the manufacturing space, and capable of carrying a meaning that connected to the company’s beliefs without requiring a long explanation.

THE NAME

Aequs is rooted in the Latin word aequus, meaning equal. It was the right word for the right reason. The company’s founding belief was partnership between equals. The name did not describe what the company made. It described how the company worked.

Importantly, the name retained a phonetic proximity to the original QuEST, preserving some continuity for existing clients and partners while establishing a completely separate identity for the market.

THE IDEANTITY™

The ideantity™ extended the idea further. The letter Q in Aequs was designed with two parallel strokes atits base, a deliberate visual device representing the concerted effort of equals moving together. The strokes were rendered in two colours: black and red. Where most identity systems treat colour as aesthetic, here the two-colour device at the base of the Q was structural. It was the idea made visible in the mark itself.

The brand line that completed the system was: ecosystems of efficiency. It translated the Latin root into a statement about commercial reality, connecting belief to outcome.

APPLICATIONS

The ideantity™ was carried across the full range of brand touchpoints: stationery, branded merchandise, advertising, office environments, and the company website. In each application, the two-stroke device at the Q remained the anchor.
The brand palette of black and red, on white, was consistent and disciplined.

BRAND BEHAVIOUR

The behaviour booklet developed for internal audiences established that the Aequs way of working wasnot a set of aspirational values but a description of how decisions were actually made. The values articulated inside the organisation, including trust, respect, and prudence in resource deployment, were each tested against three criteria: applicability at every level of the business, timelessness across changing conditions, and credibility even when following them imposed a cost.
This test-driven approach to defining brand behaviour was deliberately visible. It communicated that the values were chosen to be lived, not displayed.

OUTCOME

The Aequs brand gave a billion-dollar manufacturing business its own distinct identity, rooted in something real rather than assembled from generic sector cues. Aerospace and manufacturing brands tend to reach for the visual vocabulary of precision, scale, and technology. Aequs chose a different register entirely: it chose to name what it believed, and to carry that belief through every element of the ideantity™.

The name is rooted in Latin, but it works in English. The mark is typographic, but it carries an idea. The brand line is operational, but it expresses a philosophy. Each element arrived at the same place from a different direction, which is what makes an ideantity™ hold.

By the time the brand launched, Aequs was no longer the manufacturing arm of QuEST. It was a company with its own name, its own mark, and its own argument for why it existed. The identity did not explain the business. It expressed it.

When a name is chosen for what it means rather than what it describes, and when the mark is built to carry that meaning rather than decorate the letterforms, the brand becomes an argument. Aequs made that argument from the first day it appeared.

THE TEST OF DURABILITY

A brand built on a genuine belief has a quality that sector-specific brands do not: it can travel.

Aequs began in aerospace, which is where the original business was strongest and where the identity was first seen. But the belief that gave the brand its name, collaboration between equals producing outcomes that neither party could achieve alone, was never confined to a single industry.

Over the years that followed the creation of the brand in 2014, Aequs leveraged the belief system of ‘ecosystems of efficacy’ to create manufacturing hubs for toys, consumer durables, and now drones. The‘vertical stacking’ in the ecosystem slashes costs and allows Aequs to be competitively-priced even against Chinese manufacturers! The brand idea guided multiple businesses.

“Ecosystems of efficiency” as a brand line was not written to describe aerospace. It was written to describe a way of working. That is why it has remained current as the business has grown, and why it continues to frame new ventures without strain.
